Poverty, Gender, Climate Change, Policy and Other Systems

We incorporate various cross-cutting themes in all our research and development programs, with the understanding that there are a lot of drivers and interactions in the food system and that the food system has other outcomes in addition to diets and health, including as an important source of livelihoods.  Low incomes and poverty affect actors across various elements of the food system, and reducing these would contribute to the goal of achieving better incomes and a healthier food system. Gender relationships and norms are important drivers of food systems and diets, and our research pays attention to gender equity and aims to address disparities. Climate change is a growing threat to food systems, while some food systems are the leading causes of climate change. Our research interests here include adaptation and mitigation strategies in agricultural and food systems. In addition, our research aims to inform and guide evidence-based policymaking to orient food systems for sustainability and healthier diets. Food system drivers can be tweaked to orient them towards healthier diets through policy tools, and in understanding the various actors. Food systems do not exist in isolation but affect and are affected by other systems such as trade, health, and energy; hence the need for our research to consider these interconnections.
